Can refurbishments go wrong?
Two four-storey townhouses collapsed in London recently, the collapsed buildings form part of a terrace that was built in the late 1700s.
Kensington and Chelsea Council had approved an extension to be built on the lower ground floor of the buildings in 2018.
According to the report in the BBC the properties were under-going refurbishments, no one has been reported as injured or in the property at the time, the other houses in the terrace were evacuated as a precaution.
It is not clear what caused the collapse of the buildings but large-scale basement developments, typically entire new floors under the footprint of the house and garden, have become common among London’s wealthy.
Could this have been the cause?
This level of devastation certainly isn’t seen every day!
